Snoring: How it Happens?
Snoring is called respiratory vibration and the resulting sound. That happens as a result of abstracted air movement when a person is breathing while being asleep.
In some cases this sound can be soft, but in some other cases it can become very loud and be unpleasant. Snoring can be an alarm that a person suffers from one of the sleep disorders called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). There are a few things that can cause snoring, and the structures involved are soft palate and uvula. The airflow becomes irregular due to blocked passageway, and happens because of the following reasons:
- Weakness of throat, that causes it to close when asleep
- Fat gathered around and in the throat
- The nasal passageway obstruction
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Medicines or alcohol that relaxing throat muscles
- Sleeping on the back
- Enlarged tonsils
Snoring and Sleep Deprivation
Snoring can cause sleep deprivation to those that snore and people around them, and also drowsiness, lack of focus and even can decrease libido. It has been established that in long run it can cause social and psychological damage to those that suffer from snoring. It has also been proven that snoring can increase risk of having heart attack by a third and stroke by two thirds.

There are more and more studies are being performed that discover the impact of snoring on people and potential health issues it might create.

Statistics when it comes to snoring are very contradictory, but estimated 50% of people snore. Usually it gets noticed by a friend or a bed partner that is close to a person while he or she is asleep. Besides the loud snoring noise, this could also be a symptom of such conditions as sleep apnea. In this case a person should see a doctor, preferably in a sleep centre, where a patient will need to undergo a few tests during night sleep.
