What is Sleepiness

Excessive Sleepiness and Conditions

This condition can be explained as persistent sleepiness, and often a person has a complete lack of energy, even after having a good night sleep.

Often complications from not having proper sleep would be involuntary sleep attacks and microsleeps, which can be very dangerous. Basically it can be described as inability to maintain the certain level of alertness throughout the day.

Some people, especially those that suffer from narcolepsy, have to have naps during the day, otherwise they will be falling asleep during inappropriate times, for example, when driving, eating or when talking or doing other things.

A lot of people think that being sleepy all the time is unpleasant and not normal, however they don’t think this is something to be worried about. Often people find it hard to find time to get proper sleep, so feeling a bit sleepy is often expected, however it doesn’t mean that experiencing excessive sleepiness is normal.

How to Beat Excessive Sleepiness

Excessive sleepiness can be occasional and it can also become chronic, and it is safe to say that if you have a need to nap during the day, you might be suffering from it. This condition is often a sign of a disease, so if you suffer from it on a regular basis, you should see a doctor.

Some of the causes that can prompt the begging of sleepiness are, for example, not getting enough sleep at night time, as well as poor quality of sleep. Jet leg, shift work of all kinds and other sleep rhythm disorders can also cause this symptom. Conditions like:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Narcolepsy
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Hypersomnia
  • Depression

Are amongst other conditions causing sleepiness, as well as being genetically predisposed, having tumours, anemia, head trauma or a central nervous system. It can even be a sign of cancer.

As mentioned above, even though this condition itself is not widely recognised within medical community as a disease, it doesn’t meed that you should not be seeking help. There is a number of different techniques that can be very helpful and that can make sure that the sleep you get brings you proper rest. Another good thing about seeking a doctor’s advise is that if excessive sleepiness is caused by some illness, then you will be ensured to get a proper treatment for it.

The number one rule, when it comes to sleep, is always to make sure you get enough sleep, as nothing can replace it, and sometimes when you feel tired, is enough to simply …

Get a few naps during the day!

However, always seek a professional advise to ensure you receive proper treatment.

I have always had trouble sleeping. I have always owned the same, really old mattress. (I think it was my parent’s before it was mine). I found out through http://www.qmattresses.com that the mattress may be part of my problem. A new mattress might not solve all of my problems, but it might help, right? Other than that, I am working on staying away from caffeine, exercising more and trying to work on a sleep schedule. Thanks for your site and for giving valuable information. Oh, and P.S. – I try to stay away from naps because it makes it harder for me to sleep at night.
