Most people do not think that snoring is something to be worried about. Usually people would make jokes about snoring, and most of them would only think of snoring to be a problem when it comes to disturbing the sleep of our bed partner.
However, what most us of are not aware of is snoring is one of the most common symptom of a very common and potentially serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea, when breathing stops and starts again as a person sleeps.
This condition is treatable, however often goes without being diagnosed. It can be potentially dangerous, so it is recommended to see a doctor if you have a suspicion that you or your family member have it.

So, What is Sleep Apnea?
This condition affects the way you are breathing during sleep. It it is left untreated, breathing becomes very shallow or gets interrupted. These pauses in breathing last about 20 seconds each and they can happen hundreds of times each night.
Firstly this condition prevents from getting a proper rest during the night, because when your breath is paused, the natural rhythm of sleep is broken, and as a result you are spending more time in light sleep and much less time in the deep sleep which makes your energetic and rested the next day.
The result of a chronic sleep deprivation is causing excessive sleepiness effect.
That can slow reflexes, reduce concentration and also increase accidents. Over time it could lead to a number of serious health problems, such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and even weight gain. However, with a proper treatment, the symptoms can be controlled, and get your sleep back on track, so you feel refreshed and alert a whole day.
Sleep Apnea Types
There are a few types of sleep apnea. The most common type is called
- Obstructive sleep apnea, and it occurs when the soft tissues in the throat is getting relaxed during sleep, that causes the airway to block, as well as causing loud snoring
- Central sleep apnea is less common, and it involves the central nervous system, and that happens when the brain is failing to send a signal to muscles that are responsible for control breathing
- Complex sleep apnea is a combination of the two described above.
