So, What is Depression?
We often use the word “depression”, and when it comes in mind we would usually describe feeling unhappiness or distress that often follows an unhappy event happened to us. This kind of depression is a normal response, and usually doesn’t last long, will go away itself and doesn’t require any treatment.
However, when we are talking about depression as an illness, it is much more serious, and the feeling of sadness, difficulty coping, being negative doesn’t just go away, it will require special treatment.
About one firth of the population is affected by this condition at some stage, and for those that have never been depressed, in order to get a better understanding, it can be described like this: imagine the most painful or the most distressful moment you have ever had and imagine that
It has been going on for weeks or months
This is how people that suffer from this disorder feel, it can also be described like having a broken leg. The condition brings a lot of pain, and it can disable a person, however what should be understood is that depression can be cured, and it has a very high chance of success. This message should be given to a person that suffers from depression, so they seek treatment, and don’t suffer in silence.
Everybody, regardless of ages, social status, sex or intelligence, can get depressed, and in most severe cases it can get life threatening.
Who can Get Depression
In majority of people, depression happens as a result from stress that builds up, and a s a result this is causing the internal chemistry breakdown. However there are certain factors that can increase risk of developing this disorder. These factors include:
- When a person doesn’t communicate with family of friends about the normal things that happen in everybody’s life
- Have to deal with multiple demands, so there is no time left to relax
- Some characteristics, that can get a person stress to worry easy, such as lacking confidence or being a perfectionist.
- Having biochemistry that is can be described as fragile
- Smoking marijuana or drinking in excess
