Treatment of Excessive Sleepiness

First of all, when it comes to the treatment of excessive sleepiness, the underlying cause of this symptom should be identified first, as this condition might be caused by a number of different disorders.

There are medicines that can help to fight excessive sleepiness by improving the level of alertness and promoting wakefulness in people, as well as balancing out the sleep and wake cycle in our bodies.

Provigil Treatment

One of the medicines is called Provigil (Modafinil is a generic name, and also an active ingredient). This medicine has been approved for the treatment of sleep disorders, such as:

  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleep apnea
  • Shift work sleep disorder

It has also been used for relieving symptoms of other conditions, such as depression, anxiety and even jet leg.

Provigil promotes wakefulness, making sure that people stay alert when they need it most.

Wakefulness that Provigil provides lasts a few hours, and it give much better and longer lasting relief then let’s say caffeine does.

Everybody can get affected by excessive sleepiness, so you can’t be sure that it’ll not affect you. However, there are certain things that you can do to make sure that you minimise risk of ever suffering from it.

How to Develop a Good Sleep

One of the most important things is to develop a good sleep hygiene, and that includes going to bed and waking up at the same time, even on weekends; try to avoid sleeping during the day; make sure that before you go to bed you switch off from the things you used to do and forget about what worries you, and do something calm and relaxing: have a bath, read a book or simply go for a short walk.

If you are into meditation, it can also help to relax your mind and body. Do not over eat before sleep, try to eat at least three hours before bedtime, and avoid coffee and alcohol, as it might have an impact on sleep quality.

If you do shift work, try to reduce the number of night shifts you do, as well as minimise travel time to and from work. Ask your family to be quite when you are asleep, make your bedroom cold, dark with lots of fresh air.

If you are falling asleep suddenly, especially at dangerous times, despite having a proper amount of sleep and rest, then you should see a doctor to make sure that you are not suffering from any kind of sleep disorders or other conditions, that potentially can have excessive sleepiness as a symptom.

There are lots of medicines and behavioural therapies available for those that suffer from it, so there is no need to suffer in silence. It is always a good idea to get an advise from a doctor, so make sure that you do that before starting on treatment.
