Main Sleepiness Symptoms
One of the main symptoms of experiencing excessive sleepiness during the day is a need for sleep that cannot be suppressed, and even having a proper night sleep will not help. Sometimes it can be accompanied by the need to have extended sleep time at night.
The most extreme state of excessive isleepiness s having uncontrollable naps or sleep attacks during the day, often at bad times. These naps happen suddenly, and there is no way these attacks can be prevented. They do not provide any relief, and they will continue all day.
These attacks often accompanied by mood swings as well as anxiety, lack of energy, slow speech and impacted thinking ability. It can also provoke a loss of appetite, hallucinations, restlessness and problems with memories. All of this together might have a very negative impact on an ability to work at a normal pace, as well as keep up with family and relationship’s demands.
Causes for Sleepiness
There are a few causes for sleepiness. Some of these symptoms can go unrecognised by a person, as he or she might be thinking that they are getting enough sleep, however they don’t sleep well during the night. These causes can cause excessive sleepiness:
- Abuse of alcohol or drugs
- Nervous system problems
- Head trauma and brain tumour
- Medications or withdrawal effects
- Some medical conditions, such as obesity, depression, epilepsy ad others
- Hyper-somnia, that is excessive sleepiness when happens for no reason and there is no cause can be found
- Some sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea
Any person that is suffering from the disorders mentioned above or other similar conditions are at risk of developing excessive sleepiness, and it depends on what condition you have, excessive sleepiness can be temporary or in some cases it can last for years.
So if you keep nodding off all the time during the day, you might have hypersomnia or be simply sleep deprived, and you just need to get proper sleep.
If you spend enough time in bed, but you can’t sleep properly or wake up a number of times a night, then you could be suffering from insomnia, and treatments will be different for those two conditions, which both can cause excessive sleepiness. This is one of the reasons why you should always consult a doctor if you don’t understand the origin of your sleepiness.
